In addition to being a five-star Art Deco–style hotel set in an avant-garde building with designer rooms and suites, the Urban offers a 'Stay & Love' package to add that extra enticement to your getaway with your special someone. The package includes breakfast for two served in your room, chocolate-covered strawberries, a bottle of Champagne, and a romantic bath with salts and rose petals. If you ever feel like leaving that behind, you can rest by the outdoor pool, dine in the gourmet restaurant, or get drinks and other aphrodisiacs in the oyster cocktail bar.

Book lovers will be enchanted by Hotel de Las Letras, with its literary themes and small library, plus all of the rooms are decorated with quotations by famous writers. And when you and your partner start suffering from eye strain, it's time to look out the window and enjoy the amazing views. You could choose a room with a double terrace and an outdoor Jacuzzi, or the Double Romantic, which is decorated with flowers and candles and includes a welcome refreshment of cava and strawberries.

The Villa Real reflects owner Jordi Clos's interest in Roman archaeology. The guest rooms are elegant, with wood floors, marble bathrooms and large picture windows, and many have panels of Roman mosaics. Most double rooms have split-level sitting areas, and if you really want to cuddle up, and your budget allows, try a suite with a private terrace or Jacuzzi. Linked to the Urban via the Derby Hotels chain, the Villa Real offers the same 'Stay & Love' package, and though this sister hotel hasn't got a swimming pool, guests can saunter over to the Urban and splash around with fellow romantics there.

Here's a place you actually don't ever have to leave during your stay. They do a breakfast buffet, but with your own kitchenette with a ceramic hob, fridge and microwave, you could whip up those heart-shaped gluten-free pancakes just like your other half likes them and win bonus love points while you're at it. Head up to the rooftop terrace to take in the view of the Royal Palace and those Sabatini gardens the hotel is named after. In the spring and summer months there's also drinks service up there, making for a perfect setting for relaxing as the sun sets over the city below.

When you're ready to go big before you go home, slap down your credit card at the Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques. Housed inside a former 19th-century palace in the historic neighbourhood of Los Austrias, the decor is inspired by the Velázquez masterpiece, 'Las Meninas', and features huge details of the painting itself along with a colour palette and textiles that give rooms a classic feel with a modern touch. Get in touch with nature in the huge garden, or get in touch with yourself in the Thai Room Wellness centre. Dine on amazing cuisine in any of the three restaurants, including Dos Cielos Madrid, run by Michelin-starred chefs the Torres brothers.

If you and your sweetheart want to spend a few days in lush surroundings, the Wellington can help you out. Chandeliers, marble, murals, plush places to lounge and sleep and stare into each other's eyes... In the hotel's spa you can enjoy body wraps or facials to get yourselves all smooth and sexy for each other, or take some time to rest your tired muscles with massages. After a hand-in-hand stroll in the nearby Retiro park, head to the Wellington Club private lounge, where you can clink glasses while gazing at beautiful city views in the sunset.

Hey, lovebirds, this classy, design boutique hotel is set in a neoclassical building and features soundproofed rooms with natural, warm textures, giving you the just-us feel you've been looking for on your city break. You can even request massage and hairdresser services in your room. Stay in a stylish, modern room in this boutique hotel with views of Gran Vía that look like they came out of a travel guide. When you're hungry, you've got the Ático restaurant right in your hotel: this is haute cuisine from Michelin-starred chef Ramón Freixa. What you really might be looking for is something along the lines of the Principal's 'Madrid & Romance' package, which includes your stay, a buffet breakfast, a private sauna session, a bottle of cava and chocolates in your room, and late check-out. You can also opt for a one-hour massage in The Wellness Suite. Package or not, the two of you can book a couples massage or treatment so you don't have to be separated for one minute, unless you get lost on your turn around the 360-degree rooftop terrace.

You can thank renowned designer Jaime Beristain for this fun and fresh hotel, where you check in at the bar with a beverage and not some ordinary reception desk. There's a minty feel throughout, with bright refreshing colours and modern rooms with comfy beds and parquet floors. The rooftop bar also surprises with a colourful, casual atmosphere, fantastic views, and snacks and drinks served from a food truck. Ask about their 'Vincci & Love' package to really bring the romance out.

Óscar, Mario, Alicia and Laura are your Room Mates in Madrid. They all live fairly near each other, and have a lot in common. Today we're introducing you to Óscar. Just off Gran Vía, in a huge square in the Chueca neighbourhood, Óscar boasts 74 rooms done up by interior designer Tomás Alía. This is a boutique hotel, so all the room types are different, and each fun in its own way. You don't have to have an enormous cushiony tail extending from your bed to serve as a chair and sofa, and it's not required that you choose a bedroom with a giant bathtub right in the middle of the room, but it's good to know you have these options. Do not miss the rooftop terrace, adapted for all seasons, and with stunning 360-degree views and a bar where they can whip you up a cocktail to get you in the right mood. Bonus: breakfast is served until noon!
